Can you find less expensive services?  Absolutely.  But when you contract with a service, ask yourself if they understand the real costs of conducting their own business, before you have them consult with you on yours.  Make sure your bookkeeper understands:

1. Basic bookkeeping (anyone can take a bookkeeping course and hang their shingle - do they have the references and experience to back it up?)

2. Accounting concepts - do they understand the difference between an asset and an expense?  An account receivable and a note payable?  A corporation and a sole proprietorship?  Can they make sure your Chart of Accounts is set up properly, so your financial reports are accurate and meaningful?

3. Tax and GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) concepts.  They don't need to know how to prepare a tax return, but they should be aware of the differences between bookkeeping depreciation and tax depreciation, and should definitely know that land is NEVER depreciated.
